About Kintsugi
Kintsugi is an AI-powered sales tax and indirect tax compliance platform. It monitors economic nexus in real time, categorises products for taxability, calculates tax at checkout, and automates registrations, filings, remittance and exemption certificates, including voluntary disclosure work for historical exposure.
The company raised a $6 million Series A in 2024 at a $40 million valuation and later took a strategic investment from tax technology provider Vertex, which led an $18 million round and launched a joint 'Kintsugi Powered Vertex' offering. Kintsugi was also selected for the 2026 AICPA and CPA.com Startup Accelerator, and the platform connects to more than 75 billing, ecommerce and accounting systems including Shopify, Stripe and QuickBooks.
It is positioned for SaaS and ecommerce businesses from startup to mid-market, and for the accountants and bookkeepers who manage multi-state sales tax on their behalf.

Our in-depth review
Kintsugi sells sales tax compliance as an AI problem, competing with Avalara and TaxJar on speed of setup and a pay-per-action model rather than seat licences.
What it does well. The platform-free, $75 per automated action pricing is unusually transparent for this category and easy to trial against a known filing calendar. Nexus monitoring, registrations, filings and exemption certificates sit in one place, and the Vertex strategic investment plus the 2026 AICPA and CPA.com Startup Accelerator selection lend credibility beyond typical seed-stage claims. Vendor-reported figures of 75% less preparation time and 50% lower compliance costs are the vendor's own.
Where it falls short. It is young next to Avalara, and complex use cases such as marketplaces layered on wholesale channels will test the AI categorisation. Accountants running large multi-client books may find per-action costs add up against flat-fee rivals, and international coverage is newer than the US core.
Best for. SaaS and ecommerce companies with growing multi-state exposure, and the firms advising them, who want compliance automated without an enterprise contract.
Verdict. A genuinely modern sales tax stack that is worth piloting before you renew a legacy compliance contract.
