About Taxwire

Taxwire is a sales tax platform combined with a managed service. Its AI tax engine handles calculation for awkward cases such as multi-line invoices, uncategorised products and poor source data, while an in-house indirect tax team takes on judgement calls such as entering a new state, an acquisition or a state audit letter. Services cover nexus studies, taxability research, registrations and back-filings, rooftop-level calculation, monthly and quarterly filing and remittance, exemption certificates and a virtual mailbox that triages state notices, with US sales tax and global VAT in scope.

Named integrations include QuickBooks, Xero and NetSuite, with a custom API for other billing or commerce set-ups, and customers connect sources such as Shopify and Amazon. The company says it holds SOC 2 Type II certification, offers support from tax experts over Slack, and that implementation takes about four weeks, from a historical data sync and exposure report on day one to automated filing by week four. Founded in 2023 in New York by Andrew Rea and Steven Schmatz, it announced 25 million US dollars of seed and Series A funding led by Headline at the end of June 2026, and says it remits about 100 million dollars of sales tax a year for customers.

It is aimed at software, ecommerce and manufacturing companies with multi-state or multi-entity exposure.

Our in-depth review

Taxwire's pitch is that sales tax should be something a finance team hands over entirely, not another system to run. It pairs an AI calculation engine with its own team of tax professionals, so the customer gets software and an outsourced indirect tax function in one contract.

What it does well. The managed model suits companies without in-house tax staff. Nexus studies, taxability research, registrations, back-filings, filing and remittance and state mail triage are all covered, and the team handles the decisions that pure software leaves to the customer, such as how to respond to an audit letter. Xero sits alongside QuickBooks and NetSuite in the named integrations, which is useful for UK practices with US-selling clients. The company says it is SOC 2 Type II certified, and a structured four-week onboarding with an exposure report on day one gives a clear early deliverable. The mid-2026 funding round, in which existing investors all added more, suggests backers are content with progress.

Where it falls short. No prices are published, so a buyer cannot compare it with the per-filing pricing of Kintsugi or Numeral without a sales call, and a managed service will usually cost more than software alone. The scope of global VAT coverage is not set out on the site, so UK and EU needs should be confirmed in writing. Claims such as roughly half of customers moving from Avalara come from the company and press interviews. It is a small, young company of around two dozen people, which matters when it is taking on responsibility for filings. Relying on a vendor's team for judgement calls also means less knowledge sits inside the business or its accountant.

Best for. Software, ecommerce and manufacturing companies with exposure in many states or several entities and no internal tax function, and the finance leads who want the work taken off their desk. Smaller sellers happy to run software themselves will pay less with Kintsugi or TaxJar, and enterprise groups with e-invoicing obligations should look at Sovos.

Verdict. A credible managed alternative to running sales tax software in-house, but buyers should get a written scope and price, especially for VAT, before handing over their filings.
