An independent guide to AI tools for accountants

The AI Ledger lists 240+ AI tools for accountants and bookkeepers in the UK and US, each with an editor score and a sceptical review. It is run as an independent UK business, with no investment from any software vendor.

What we promise

  • Editor scores and verdicts are never for sale.
  • Every listing is free, and free listings stay free.
  • Anything paid for is labelled, and affiliate links are disclosed.
  • Vendor claims are reported as the vendor's claims, not as fact.
  • Tools that no longer exist are removed, not left to rot.

How a score is set

Each tool is scored out of 5 by the editor across five questions. The score is a judgement, not a formula, and the review explains it.

  1. 1

    Does the job

How well it handles the task a practice actually buys it for, judged against the vendor's own documentation, demos, independent coverage and user reports.

  2. 2

Fit for UK and US practices

Integrations with Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, FreeAgent and IRIS, Making Tax Digital and HMRC support where it matters, and whether it suits a small firm or only a large finance team.

  3. 3

    Price and value

What it really costs a practice once per-client or per-user pricing is counted, and whether the published pricing is honest.

  4. 4

    Setup and lock-in

How long it takes to get going, how much data entry or change management it needs, and how hard it is to leave.

  5. 5

    Evidence

How much of what the vendor claims can be checked. A tool with thin independent evidence scores lower until the evidence arrives.

Questions

Can a vendor pay for a better score?

No. Scores, reviews and verdicts are written by the editor and cannot be bought, changed or removed for money. A Verified profile adds a badge, screenshots, a demo video and a right of reply. It never changes the score or the order of the free list.

How does The AI Ledger make money?

From affiliate commissions on some outbound links, Verified profiles bought by vendors, and the optional Pro plan for practices. Affiliate links are disclosed on every tool page that carries one, and anything paid for is labelled.

How often are listings checked?

Every day, a set of listings is re-verified against the vendor's own site: the product still exists, the link works, the pricing matches. Each listing shows its last verified date. Tools that shut down, disappear or turn out to be services rather than software are removed.

A listing is wrong. How do I get it fixed?

Email aaron@ailedger.uk or use the form on the vendor page. Corrections are free and are made the same working day once checked.

Do you test every tool hands-on?

Not every one. Reviews are built from the vendor's documentation and pricing, product demos, independent press and user reports, and hands-on use where we have it. Where evidence is thin, the review says so.

Start with the tool finder, browse the directory, or read the weekly newsletter. Vendors can find their options on the vendor page.
