About Avalara Avi

Avi is Avalara's lead AI agent for tax and compliance, launched in November 2025. Users describe a task in plain language and Avi routes it to specialised agents covering research, exemption certificates and returns, with human approval before anything is filed or activated. It runs on ALFA, the Avalara LLM Framework for Agentic Applications, and Avalara's year-end review said it was also available as a Chrome extension, with Outlook and NetSuite support planned for early 2026.

At its CRUSH conference in late September 2026 Avalara unveiled Avalara Aviator, an agent hub that customers use through Avi. In the launch example, Avi drafts a tax rule the customer describes, simulates it against past transactions, flags conflicts and waits for approval before activating it. Avalara said Aviator would be generally available after CRUSH Europe and initially delivered to existing customers at no extra cost. The wider platform integrates with QuickBooks, Sage, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics, SAP, Shopify, WooCommerce, Salesforce, Stripe and Zuora, and offers VAT returns, e-invoicing and AI-guided VAT registration. Avalara says it handles more than 54 billion AvaTax API calls a year.

It is positioned at existing Avalara customers and businesses with multi-jurisdiction sales tax and VAT obligations.

Our in-depth review

Avalara is the default name in US sales tax automation, and Avi is its attempt to turn a calculation engine into an AI workforce: an agent that takes instructions in plain language and coordinates the work of setting rules, managing certificates and preparing returns. For an accounting firm, it matters when clients already run AvaTax or Avalara returns.

What it does well. The approval-first design is right for compliance: Avi drafts and simulates a rule against historic transactions, shows the conflicts and only activates it once a person signs off, which leaves an audit trail. Breadth is the real advantage, with integrations across QuickBooks, Sage, NetSuite, Dynamics, SAP and the major ecommerce platforms, and decades of rules content behind it. Delivering Aviator to existing customers at no extra cost at first lowers the barrier to trying it.

Where it falls short. Branding is confusing: Avi, Aviator, ALFA and lead agents are described differently across pages, and buyers should ask exactly which agents are live in their account. General availability of Aviator was promised only after CRUSH Europe in October 2026, so features are new and lightly proven, and the speed claims are Avalara's own. Free access is described as initial, so expect pricing later; the underlying Avalara plans start at $69 a month for Select sales tax and returns and rise quickly with volume. The AI material says little about UK specifics; Making Tax Digital is not mentioned, so UK VAT returns may still be better filed from the ledger. Smaller digital sellers may find Anrok or Kintsugi in this directory simpler and cheaper.

Best for. Mid-sized and larger businesses already on Avalara, and the firms that manage their indirect tax. In a trial, ask Avi to set up a real exemption or product rule, check the simulation against last quarter's transactions, and confirm who in the client team approves each change. Firms with only UK VAT clients will rarely need it.

Verdict. A credible, approval-first agent layer on the most widely used sales tax platform, worth switching on for existing customers, but too new and too tangled in branding to choose Avalara for on its own.
