Month-End Close Software UK 2026: AI Tools, Prices per Client and Which to Choose
The best month-end close software depends on who is closing the books. A practice closing dozens of small Xero and QuickBooks clients needs a per-client review tool such as Xenett (from $7.50 per client a month) or Intuit's Books Close (£2 to £3 per client), while an in-house finance team needs a close platform such as FloQast, Numeric or BlackLine, which are quote-only. Prices below were read from vendor pages on 27 October 2026.
TL;DR:
- Month-end close software splits into four kinds: per-client close tools for practices, close platforms for finance teams, AI-native ledgers, and AI coworkers that prepare month-end packs.
- For practices, the published prices are Xenett from $7.50 per client a month, Intuit Books Close at £3 per client (up to 20 clients) or £2 (21 or more) plus Accelerate at £69 a month plus VAT from 20 January 2027, and Numbers Game from $59 a month for one connection.
- Closing 40 QuickBooks clients costs £149 a month on Intuit at full price (£74.50 in the first discounted year), against $300 on Xenett's review tier.
- FloQast, Numeric and BlackLine publish no prices; Vendr reports a median BlackLine contract of $40,125 a year from 74 purchases.
- Digits and Puzzle replace the ledger rather than plugging into it, and Digits says it serves US-based entities.
- Our top-scored close tools are Pilot Meridian and Adaptive (4.7), then Double, FloQast and Numeric (4.6).

What does month-end close software actually do?
It turns the close from a spreadsheet checklist into a repeatable process with evidence. Depending on the product, that means one or more of four jobs:
- Review: scanning the ledger for miscoded transactions, unreconciled items, missing receipts and odd balances before anyone signs off.
- Preparation: drafting accruals, prepayments, reversing entries and reconciliations for a person to approve.
- Management: checklists, sign-offs, controls and an audit trail across a team.
- Reporting: variance commentary and a month-end pack for the client or the board.
Few tools do all four. The common mistake is buying a close management platform built for a 20-person finance team when what a practice needs is a review tool that runs across 50 small ledgers, or the reverse.

What does close software cost a UK practice?
Only three practice tools publish enough to model: Xenett, Intuit and Numbers Game. Here is the monthly cost of closing 10, 40 and 100 clients, before VAT, at the prices on each vendor's page today.
| Monthly cost | 10 clients | 40 clients | 100 clients |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xenett AI Financials Review ($7.50 per client) | $75 | $300 | $750 |
| Xenett Review plus Workflow ($17.50 per client) | $175 | $700 | $1,750 |
| Intuit Accelerate (£69) plus Books Close | £99 (at £3) | £149 (at £2) | £269 (at £2) |
| Intuit, first 12 months at 50% off | £49.50 | £74.50 | £134.50 |
| Numbers Game (connection credits) | $419 (Growth, 7 credits plus 3 at $40) | $1,424 (Scale, 15 credits plus 25 at $35) | Enterprise quote |
The sums: Xenett is simply clients times the rate. Intuit is £69 plus clients times £3 up to 20 clients, or times £2 from 21. Numbers Game charges one credit per QuickBooks or Xero company, so 40 clients is Scale's 15 credits at $549 plus 25 extra credits at $35 each.
What the table shows:
- For QuickBooks-only practices, Intuit is the cheapest route by far, because Books Close is priced like a utility and Core is free. It only works on QuickBooks Online.
- For mixed Xero and QuickBooks books, Xenett is the low-cost review layer, at $7.50 a client with unlimited users. Its accruals add-on is $15 per client and inter-company reconciliation $10, both free for the first 60 days.
- Numbers Game is priced for a handful of clients, not a whole book. It connects Claude to client ledgers to pull reports, post transactions and produce PDFs, which suits ad-hoc analysis more than a 100-client monthly close.
Xenett also offers a discount for firms with under 10 clients and a 14-day trial. Intuit's 50% discount applies automatically for the first 12 months from 20 January 2027.
Which close tools suit an accounting practice?
Double is one of the highest-scored close and review tools for bookkeeping firms on QuickBooks Online or Xero in our directory, at 4.6. It prices per connected client with team members free, but does not publish the package price, so get a quote at your client count. Its Autoclose add-on is $500 a month.
Pilot Meridian scores 4.7 for its ambition: it aims to run the full close, writing entries into QuickBooks Online or Xero with controls and a decision log. Pricing is quoted after a demo, and it has not been proven on UK VAT, so pilot it on one entity first.
Xenett is the value pick. It checks rather than prepares: it flags what is wrong in the books, and its Workflow tier (0 per client) adds practice workflow, with Google Drive and OneDrive connections.
Intuit Accountant Suite with Books Close is the default for QuickBooks practices once QuickBooks Online Accountant closes on 31 December 2026. Our QBOA guide covers the switch.
Mimo is a UK, Xero-focused close and VAT agent that posts journals back to Xero. Its close agents are now priced after a demo, so get a per-client figure in writing.
GATHER.nexus fits groups with several companies: £70 a month per group with unlimited companies, a 30-day trial and no card required, for consolidation and inter-company work on QuickBooks or Xero.
Which close platforms suit an in-house finance team?
FloQast is the reference close management platform: checklists, reconciliations, sign-offs and controls, with AI agents on top. It sells three packages (Close Management, Close AI, and Risk and Compliance) by quote, with no per-user fees. It is overkill for a bookkeeping practice.
Numeric combines close management with flux analysis and reporting, priced on transactions and seats by quote. It integrates with NetSuite, QuickBooks Online, Xero and Sage Intacct.
BlackLine is the enterprise option for SAP and Oracle estates. It publishes no prices; Vendr, which tracks software purchases, reports a median of $40,125 a year across 74 purchases, from $13,154 to $101,000. For a UK team searching for a close tool under £50,000 a year, that range is the useful benchmark.
The practical rule: a close platform pays off when more than three people touch the close and the auditors ask for evidence. Below that, a review tool and a shared checklist usually do the job.
Should you switch to an AI-native ledger instead?
Three tools replace the ledger rather than adding a close layer to it.
- Digits runs transaction coding, reconciliations, accruals and close in its own ledger. Essentials is $65 a month, Core $100 and Pro $250, with firms billed per client account. Digits says each entity must be US-based.
- Puzzle is a ledger for startups, from $30 a month (Starter, 1 seat) to $360 (Scale), with 20% off yearly. An expert-reviewed bookkeeping service starts at $171 a month.
- Eleven sells firm plans from $149 a month for 5 entities ($50 each after that, up to 19) and $449 for 20 entities ($25 each after that, up to 49), with a 14-day trial and no card required.
Moving a client's ledger is a bigger decision than buying a close tool: payroll, bank feeds, MTD filing and the client's own habits all move with it. Our automated bookkeeping software guide covers that decision.
Where AI coworkers fit in the close
A newer group of tools act as AI assistants for the whole practice rather than close software.
- Combinely works across Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, FreeAgent, HMRC and Karbon to prepare month-end packs. It is £180 per user a month billed yearly upfront, £200 on an annual plan paid monthly or £220 month to month.
- Dytto is an AI agent for emails, research and tasks for Xero practices, listed on Xero's UK marketplace at £45 per user a month billed annually or £50 monthly, excluding tax, with a 7-day trial.
Both price per user, not per client, so they suit a small team with a large book. Neither replaces a reconciliation and sign-off process.
Where these tools fall short
- Most prices are hidden. Of the 59 tools in our month-end close category, only a handful publish a figure. Budget time for demos.
- Dollar pricing. Xenett, Numbers Game, Digits, Puzzle and Eleven price in US dollars, so UK costs move with the exchange rate.
- Preparation is still supervised. Tools that draft accruals or post journals need a reviewer, and none of them knows a client's business as well as the person closing it.
- UK specifics vary. VAT, CIS and MTD sit outside most close tools. Check how the tool treats VAT on accruals before trusting its drafts.
- Ledger limits. Intuit Books Close is QuickBooks only, Mimo is Xero only, and the AI-native ledgers need a migration.
How to test a close tool in one month
- Pick three clients or entities: one clean, one messy and one with accruals or inter-company balances.
- Close them twice: once your usual way, once with the tool, in the same month.
- Count what the tool found that your usual review missed, and what it flagged wrongly.
- Time both closes, including the reviewer's time, not just the preparer's.
- Price your real book with the cost table above, at your client count and currency.
- Check the audit trail by asking: could a reviewer see who approved each entry and why?
Our verdict: which to choose
- QuickBooks-only practice: start with Intuit Accountant Suite and Books Close; it is the cheapest route and free until 20 January 2027.
- Mixed Xero and QuickBooks practice on a budget: Xenett for review, with Workflow if you need checklists.
- Bookkeeping firm that wants a top-scored close and review tool: Double, priced at your client count.
- Firm wanting the close done for it: pilot Pilot Meridian on one entity.
- In-house finance team of three or more: FloQast or Numeric, and BlackLine for SAP or Oracle estates.
- Group with several companies: GATHER.nexus for consolidation from £70 a month.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best month-end close software for a small UK practice?
For a practice on QuickBooks Online, Intuit Accountant Suite with Books Close is the cheapest at £2 to £3 per client plus £69 a month from 20 January 2027. For mixed Xero and QuickBooks books, Xenett from $7.50 per client is the low-cost review option, and Double is one of the highest-scored close and review tools in our directory.
How much does month-end close software cost?
Practice tools that publish prices run from $7.50 per client a month (Xenett) to £2 to £3 per client (Intuit Books Close). Close platforms for finance teams, such as FloQast, Numeric and BlackLine, are quote only; Vendr reports a median BlackLine contract of $40,125 a year.
Can AI do the month-end close on its own?
Not unsupervised. Tools such as Pilot Meridian and Double draft entries and reconciliations, but a person still reviews and approves them. Start with one entity and keep a review step until the drafts are reliably right.
Is there month-end close software for Xero?
Yes. Xenett, Double, Pilot Meridian, Mimo, GATHER.nexus and Numbers Game all connect to Xero. Mimo is built for Xero only and posts journals back into it.
What is the difference between close management and close automation?
Close management organises the work (checklists, sign-offs, controls and audit trail), as FloQast does. Close automation attempts the work itself, drafting accruals, prepayments and reconciliations, as Pilot Meridian and Double aim to.
Do close tools handle UK VAT?
Not as a rule. VAT returns, CIS and MTD filing sit in the ledger or a separate tool. Check how any close tool treats VAT on accruals and prepayments before relying on its drafts.
