About Adaptive
Adaptive is an AI-native project accounting platform for the construction industry. Its always-on agents ingest and code invoices to the right job and cost code, draft cost-plus, fixed-price and AIA billings, monitor change orders, chase lien waivers and insurance certificates, and keep WIP reports and forecasts current.
The platform is live with more than 700 contractors and is backed by Andreessen Horowitz and Emergence Capital, having closed a $19 million Series A in July 2024 for roughly $26 million raised in total. It is SOC 2 Type 2 certified, was selected for the 2026 AICPA and CPA.com Startup Accelerator, and works alongside ledgers including QuickBooks, Sage, Foundation and Acumatica rather than replacing them, with every agent action reviewed by a human before it touches the books.
Adaptive is positioned for general contractors, specialty trades and developers with roughly $5 million to $1 billion in revenue, and for the accounting firms that run construction clients' books.
Key Features
- Always-on agents for AP coding, billings, change orders and WIP
- Field coordination by voice, text and email
- Duplicate invoice and fraud checks before bills move
- Human review before anything posts to the general ledger
Our in-depth review
Adaptive takes the agent playbook and points it at one of the messiest corners of accounting: construction project books, where job costing, retainage and compliance paperwork swamp back offices.
What it does well. The agent line-up maps neatly onto real project accounting jobs, from AP coding and AIA billings to lien waiver chasing and field updates collected by phone or text. The design choice that nothing auto-posts to the general ledger keeps accountants in control, and 700+ live contractors, SOC 2 Type 2 certification and selection for the 2026 AICPA and CPA.com Startup Accelerator are meaningful signals. Backing from a16z and Emergence adds staying power.
Where it falls short. Pricing is not published, and implementation runs 30 to 90 days per the vendor, so this is a considered purchase rather than a quick win. It is strictly a construction play, and firms without a construction book will find no use for it. Claims about profit-fade detection are the vendor's own and worth testing against a real job.
Best for. Construction-focused accounting firms and controllers at contractors between $5 million and $1 billion in revenue who want project accounting handled without an ERP migration.
Verdict. The most credible AI option yet for construction accounting, provided you have the client base to justify the onboarding.
