Tofu is an AI bookkeeping agent that automates accounts-payable data entry, extracting line-item detail from invoices and receipts and posting draft entries straight into Xero or QuickBooks. It is aimed squarely at accountants and bookkeepers.

What it does well: capture depth and learning. Tofu extracts every line, with description, quantity, price and account code, handles 200-plus languages, and learns from each client's existing chart of accounts and coding history, so onboarding is quick (around 15 minutes per client) and accuracy compounds as you review and approve. Firms report cutting data entry time substantially and recovering hours of billable time per week. Pricing is transparent and document-based.

Where it falls short: it is a newer tool, so the independent review base is still thin, and like every capture tool it still needs a human review and approve step rather than running fully unattended. It is focused on AP capture, not a full ledger.

Best for: bookkeepers and practices on Xero or QuickBooks that want fast-learning, line-item AP capture with per-document pricing.

Verdict: a strong, modern alternative in the Dext and AutoEntry space, with the self-learning angle as its edge. Trial it on a few clients, keep the review step, and the compounding accuracy can make it stick.
