About Expensify

Expensify is a widely used expense and receipt management platform for individuals, businesses and accounting firms. Its SmartScan technology automatically captures and codes receipt data, generating expense reports that sync to accounting systems such as QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite and Sage Intacct.

On 8 June 2026 Expensify launched a Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration, allowing AI assistants such as Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor to query a user's expense and receipt data through natural language, part of a broader 2026 wave of accounting platforms exposing their data to general-purpose AI assistants. The addition extends Expensify's automation beyond capture into conversational reporting and analysis.

Our in-depth review

Expensify is expense and receipt management, using AI and OCR to capture receipts, categorise spend and feed it into your accounting system. It is popular for employee expense reports and client receipt collection.

What it does well: the mobile experience is the draw. Snap a receipt and Expensify reads and categorises it, which cuts manual entry, and it syncs with QuickBooks and Xero so expenses land in the books. Accountants like using it to collect receipts from clients automatically rather than chasing paper, and the automation around expense reports and approvals is mature.

Where it falls short: like all OCR tools, accuracy varies, and the AI occasionally misreads receipts, so submissions still need a review pass. Pricing is seen as on the higher side versus some rivals, and a few users find the interface unintuitive at first, with a billing model and scan limits that can surprise smaller users.

Best for: businesses and practices that want employee expense reports and client receipt capture handled on mobile, feeding into Xero or QuickBooks.

Verdict: a strong, established expense tool that earns its place for mobile capture and approvals. Build in a light review step for OCR misreads, and check the pricing tiers against your volume, since costs can climb.
