Our in-depth review

AutoEntry is a document capture tool now owned by Sage, extracting data from invoices, receipts, bills and bank statements and posting it into Sage, Xero or QuickBooks. It competes head to head with Dext.

What it does well: its standout is full line-item extraction, pulling every line on an invoice including description, quantity, unit price and VAT, which matters in VAT-heavy work where detail counts. For practices, one account covers unlimited client companies, and reviewers rate the accuracy as accountant grade.

Where it falls short: it runs on a credit system, and the recurring complaint is that unused credits do not roll over, so seasonal document volumes mean wasted credits some months and overruns in others. It gets expensive at high volume. Some users also found that account coding and tax setups were not always remembered, forcing manual re-saving. Like Dext, it needs a real accounting system underneath it.

Best for: practices that want detailed line-item capture, especially in the UK and other VAT markets, and value the single practice account across many clients.

Verdict: a strong, slightly cheaper-feeling alternative to Dext with better line-item depth, let down mainly by the non-rolling credit model. If your volume is steady and predictable, it is excellent. If it swings month to month, watch the credits.
