About Tellen

Tellen sells an AI agent workforce aimed squarely at audit firms rather than at finance departments. Its agents pull evidence through client portals, run multi-layer attribute and control testing, draft financial statements and footnotes, and run consistency and quality scans across a completed binder.

The company was founded in late 2023 by Deepak Lalit, a former EY auditor and PE-backed fintech CFO, alongside Jason Jones and CTO Paul Gerlich, previously an engineering lead at Workiva and AuditBoard. It raised USD 500,000 from Array Ventures at founding and a USD 2 million pre-seed from Blumberg Capital, completed a SOC 2 Type 2 examination performed by an independent CPA firm in early 2025, signed two top-20 firms as design customers, acquired Tellen QM to extend into quality management, and has since announced a partnership with Grant Thornton on audit quality. Deployment goes into the firm's own Azure, AWS or GCP environment, and it integrates with Caseware, Suralink and Microsoft 365.

Pricing is outcome-based rather than per seat, which positions it at mid-sized and larger audit practices with the volume to make that arithmetic work.

Key Features

  • Specialised agents across planning research, attribute and control testing, financial statement and footnote drafting, and review consistency checks
  • Scans audit binders in engagement management platforms to detect and help remediate quality issues
  • Microsoft Excel add-in that brings testing automation into existing workpapers
  • Deploys into the firm's own Azure, AWS or GCP tenancy so client data does not leave the firm

Our in-depth review

Tellen is one of the few audit AI vendors that has resisted the temptation to become a general finance product, and it shows in both the integration list and the deployment model.

What it does well. The architecture is the selling point. Deploying into the firm's own cloud tenancy means client data never leaves the firm's control, which removes the objection that kills most audit AI pilots before they start. The SOC 2 Type 2 examination was performed by an independent CPA firm rather than self-attested, the integrations target the systems auditors actually live in (Caseware, Suralink, an Excel add-in), and the agents are scoped to discrete audit tasks rather than sold as an end-to-end replacement. Outcome-based pricing shifts some risk onto the vendor, which is unusual and welcome. A Grant Thornton partnership and two top-20 design firms are real validation.

Where it falls short. It remains a small company on modest funding, roughly USD 2.5 million disclosed, which is thin against the engineering demands of audit software and a live question for a firm signing a multi-year dependency. The ROI figures are Tellen's own and come from single engagements: the cited 332% return and near-300 hours saved at one firm are not a benchmark. Outcome-based pricing sounds attractive but is hard to scope without seeing the contract, and 'traceable outputs backed by verifiable sources' is the vendor's description, not an independently tested claim. Deploying into your own cloud also means your IT function inherits work that a SaaS vendor would otherwise carry.

Best for. Mid-sized to large audit practices with in-house IT capability, existing Caseware and Suralink workflows, and enough engagement volume to justify an outcome-based contract.

Verdict. Credible, well-targeted and built by people who have done the work, but small enough that vendor risk belongs in the evaluation.

A serious audit-specific agent platform whose own-cloud deployment answers the objection that stalls most firm pilots.

Pricing
Outcome-based pricing tied to value delivered rather than seat count. No public price list and no self-serve tier; pricing is quoted after a demo and consultation. Deploys into the firm's own Azure, AWS or GCP environment, so cloud hosting costs sit with the firm.
