About Rational
Rational is a Y Combinator backed platform that provides AI coworkers for accounting teams. Its agents take in invoices, receipts, statements and client emails, apply the firm's own rules, and prepare routine work such as AP coding, bank reconciliations, expense review and close tasks for human sign off.
The company launched publicly in July 2026 and integrates with more than 300 systems, including QuickBooks, Xero, Sage Intacct, NetSuite, SAP, BILL and BlackLine. Exceptions are routed to the right reviewer with supporting context, and customers include a Fortune Global 500 company and mid sized firms such as Tenace International.
Rational is positioned for accounting firms and in house finance teams that want to hand routine preparation work to agents while keeping approval gates and review firmly with staff.

Our in-depth review
Rational pitches its product as AI employees for accounting work, a crowded claim in 2026. The YC backed startup focuses on preparing routine work for review rather than promising fully autonomous accounting, which is a sensible framing.
What it does well. The intake to review flow is clearly thought through. Work arrives from existing systems, agents code invoices, draft reconciliations and chase documents, and exceptions land with the right person alongside the evidence needed to decide. The vendor says it supports more than 300 integrations and cites a Fortune Global 500 customer moving roughly 12,000 invoices per cycle through the platform, though both figures are the vendor's own. Keeping approval gates and firm specific rules at the centre should reassure sceptical reviewers.
Where it falls short. Rational is young and launched publicly only in July 2026, so there is little independent evidence on accuracy, and no public pricing to benchmark. Firms will need to test how well the agents learn nuanced coding preferences, and the guided onboarding interviews will take real staff time up front.
Best for. Accounting firms and finance teams with high volumes of routine AP, reconciliation and close preparation who want agents to do the prep while staff keep sign off.
Verdict. A promising, well designed take on agentic accounting work, provided you treat its claims as early stage.
