About Combinely

Combinely is a Y Combinator-backed company whose assistant, Coco, prepares accounting work inside the software a practice already uses. The site lists more than 50 ready workflows across bookkeeping, VAT, payroll, personal and corporation tax, accounts and practice admin, including bank reconciliations, VAT return workings, payroll email drafts and document chasing, and firms can build custom agents by describing a task. It began as an inbox assistant that drafts client replies from a firm's past answers, and that remains part of the product.

Integrations named on the site are Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, FreeAgent, BrightPay, Paycircle, Capium, Employment Hero, HMRC, Excel, Outlook, Karbon, Ignition, Bright and Companies House. Coco flags items needing professional judgement and nothing is finalised without the practice's sign-off. The company says it is SOC 2 Type II audited and UK GDPR compliant, publishes a data processing agreement and never uses customer data to train models. It cites more than 1,000 accountants and over 70 practices as users, with case studies from McCabe Ford Williams, Blu Sky, LedgerPlus and Incra Group.

It is positioned for UK accounting practices that want AI help across service lines rather than a single-task tool.

Our in-depth review

Combinely set out to clear the accountant's inbox and has grown into something broader: an AI coworker that prepares routine compliance work across a UK practice, from bank reconciliations and VAT workings to payroll emails and document chasing, and hands it to a person for sign-off.

What it does well. UK fit is the standout. Few tools in this directory name Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, FreeAgent, Capium, BrightPay, Paycircle, HMRC and Companies House in one integration list, and that breadth matters because a practice's work spans all of them. The review-before-final principle is right for regulated work, and the security position, with SOC 2 Type II, UK GDPR, a published DPA and no training on client data, answers the first questions a partner will ask. Case studies from named UK firms, including one that built 78 agents in eight weeks, suggest real adoption rather than pilots, though the outcome figures are the firms' and the vendor's own.

Where it falls short. Pricing starts at £180 per user per month, which is a significant line for a small practice: a five-person team is looking at around £900 a month before any time is saved. The breadth of more than 50 workflows also means quality will vary by task, and custom agents described in plain English need testing before they are trusted. The integrations list does not say how deep each connection goes, for example whether Coco posts to the ledger or only reads from it. Its earlier positioning as an Outlook assistant means Gmail-based firms should confirm support.

Best for. UK practices of roughly ten to fifty staff with high volumes of VAT, payroll and bookkeeping work and partners willing to invest time in setup. In a trial, pick three high-volume workflows, run them on live clients for a month and measure review time per job. Smaller firms that mainly want client chasing and portals may find Karbon or Financial Cents cheaper, and firms focused on meetings may prefer Abacor.

Verdict. One of the most UK-relevant AI assistants in the directory, with strong integrations and sensible controls. The per-user price demands a clear business case, so prove the time savings on a handful of workflows before rolling it out.
