About Abacus

Abacus is an AI tax preparation tool that extracts data from complex tax documents, including K-1s, K-3s and more than 55 state forms, and builds review-ready workpapers directly in Excel. It covers all K-1 types (1065, 1041 and 1120-S) down to footnote items such as 11ZZ, QBI and UBTI.

The company was founded by Stanford engineers Cody and Brandon Sugarman and raised a $6.6 million seed round led by Menlo Ventures with participation from Pear VC, announced in July 2025. The platform is SOC 2 compliant and says it has securely processed more than one million pages.

Abacus is positioned for US CPA firms with partnership-heavy tax work, where preparers spend most of their time on manual data entry. Customer testimonials on its site come from tax partners at Top 25, Top 50 and Top 75 firms.

Our in-depth review

Abacus goes after one of the most concrete pain points in US tax practice: getting K-1 and K-3 data out of PDFs and into workpapers. Rather than promising an autonomous tax preparer, it focuses on extraction accuracy and lives inside Excel, where prep teams already work.

What it does well. The scope is refreshingly narrow and deep. It supports all K-1 types (1065, 1041 and 1120-S), K-3s and more than 55 state forms, including footnote items such as 11ZZ, QBI and UBTI that trip up generic OCR. The vendor says more than one million pages have been processed, and site testimonials from tax partners at Top 25 to Top 75 firms report prep time cut by two thirds, though those are the vendor's own quotes. A $6.6 million seed led by Menlo Ventures and SOC 2 compliance add credibility.

Where it falls short. This is a US partnership tax specialist, not a general practice tool, so UK firms and non-K-1 workflows get little from it. There is no public pricing, access runs through a demo and waitlist, and accuracy claims have not been independently benchmarked. The final push into tax software still relies on your own review and import step.

Best for. US CPA firms with heavy 1065 and 1120-S volumes whose preparers lose days to K-1 data entry each season.

Verdict. A credible, tightly scoped extraction specialist worth trialling for K-1-heavy US practices, with little to offer outside that niche.
