About Mercury Books
Mercury Books is a double-entry accounting product built directly into Mercury's business banking platform. It pulls in activity from Mercury banking, cards, invoicing and bill pay, then uses AI to categorise and reconcile that activity in real time, supporting both accrual and cash basis and generating P&L, cash flow and balance sheet reports.
It launched on 16 September 2026. Customers can connect external platforms including Stripe, Gusto and PayPal, and everything is categorised and reconciled through full double-entry accounting. The product works with Command, Mercury's built-in AI agent, so users can ask questions about their finances or take actions such as recategorising transactions in bulk, writing journal entries or updating the chart of accounts in plain language. Accountants can be invited into the books at no additional cost, and businesses without one can be matched with a Mercury accounting partner. It is free for all of 2026 and then $35 a month.
It is positioned at startups and small businesses that already bank with Mercury and want their books maintained without a separate ledger product, and at the bookkeepers and accountants who serve them.

Our in-depth review
Mercury Books is a bank building its own general ledger, which inverts the usual arrangement where the ledger sits downstream of a bank feed and spends its life guessing what a transaction was.
What it does well. The structural argument is the strong one. Mercury already holds the payment instruction, the card authorisation, the invoice and the bill, so it has richer context at the moment of categorisation than any tool reading a feed after settlement. Real-time reconciliation therefore has a genuine accuracy advantage rather than a marketing one. Full double-entry on accrual or cash basis means it produces statements an accountant can work with, not a spending summary. The free accountant seat is the right call and signals that Mercury wants professionals inside the product rather than routed around. Natural language bulk edits through Command address the single most tedious part of cleanup work.
Where it falls short. The lock-in is total, because Books is available only to Mercury account holders, so the accounting decision becomes a banking decision. It launched on 16 September 2026 and there is no independent evidence yet of how it handles multi-entity structures, foreign currency, inventory or anything beyond a straightforward services business. Free for 2026 then $35 a month is attractive, but a repricing after the first year is a known pattern. Firms with clients spread across banks gain nothing portable here.
Best for. Startups and small service businesses that already bank with Mercury, and the bookkeepers who handle a concentrated book of them.
Verdict. The most structurally interesting bookkeeping launch of the quarter, worth a pilot on a Mercury client but not a reason to move anyone's banking.
