This is The AI Ledger Weekly: what actually changed in AI accounting software this week, checked against primary sources before it reaches you. Reading time: 4 minutes.

The most important change this week is that Dext now lets a practice question its client data from Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot, which turns a bookkeeping tool into something your AI assistant can read.

This week at a glance

  • Dext: AI Connector is read-only and limited to Practice Advanced accounts, at no extra cost, in 5 countries.
  • Financial Cents: a new MCP server is on the Scale plan, uses OAuth 2.1 and offers no delete actions.
  • BILL: its risk checks flagged an average of $138,000 per customer between August and September, by the company's own count.
  • Tipalti: a new AP Agent and MCP connection announced on 22 October.
  • superglue and Artifact: a partnership aiming for a first close within 1 month of onboarding.

The big story: Dext connects practice data to the AI assistants firms already use

Why it matters: Dext is one of the most widely used capture tools in UK practices, and until now a firm that wanted an AI assistant to answer questions about its clients had to export data first. On 22 October, CPA Practice Advisor reported that Dext has launched AI Connector, a Model Context Protocol (MCP) link that lets a practice query its data through Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot.

The examples Dext gives are practical: which clients have the lowest health scores, where time went last month, a client's live cash position, and which clients lack a dividends account before year end. Dext's help centre adds that it is currently for Practice accounts only, that Business accounts are not supported, and that a firm's IT administrator must add it to the workspace first. Dext says it is available to Practice Advanced partners in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand at no additional cost.

The safeguards are narrower than the headline. Dext describes the connector as read-only, limited to what the user can already see, and unable to make changes. Its chief product officer says it is "built to retrieve, not to decide." But each answer is processed by whichever AI provider the firm has chosen, so that provider's data policies apply.

What it means for your practice. Treat this as a client confidentiality decision first and a productivity gain second. Before connecting anything, check your engagement letters and privacy notice cover processing by OpenAI, Anthropic or Microsoft, and confirm which staff can see which clients, because the connector inherits those permissions. If you are on a lower Dext plan, do not upgrade for this alone: Dext itself calls it "an early step." Test it on a handful of non-sensitive clients, and compare answers against the Dext dashboard before anyone relies on them. See Dext, which has an editor score of 4.7, and our data entry and receipts category.

Also this week

Financial Cents gives practice management an MCP server. On 20 October, CPA Practice Advisor reported the launch, available on the Scale plan. Firms can ask about overdue work, log time and create tasks from Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini. The company says delete actions are not available and changes need confirmation. See Financial Cents, editor score 4.3.

BILL adds risk checks, an AI control hub and an external MCP. Announced on 19 October, the update is described on BILL's own site. BILL says its risk intelligence caught about $138,000 of mistakes or odd payments per customer across August and September, an unaudited marketing figure. Expanded chat is in beta with a waitlist. See BILL, editor score 4.3.

Tipalti launches an AP Agent and MCP access. On 22 October, CPA Practice Advisor reported that Tipalti's agent covers capture, coding, approvals, payments and reconciliation, with exceptions escalated to people. No pricing or date was given. See Tipalti, editor score 4.2.

superglue and Artifact pair migration with onboarding. Announced on 21 October, the partnership combines Artifact's accounting agents with superglue's data migration tools across ERPs such as Sage Intacct and NetSuite, so a new client reaches a first close within 1 month. Neither pricing nor availability was disclosed, so treat it as intent.

One to watch: Intuit Intelligence outside the US

On 14 October, IT Brief reported that Intuit Intelligence for QuickBooks and Intuit Accountant Suite has launched in Canada, as part of an international rollout that also covers the UK and Australia. International customers get the features in beta, and UK dates were not given. Intuit claims early adopters save 13 hours a month, which is its own figure. UK firms should watch for QuickBooks + Intuit Intelligence availability, currently scored 4.3.
