This is The AI Ledger Weekly: what actually changed in AI accounting software this week, checked against primary sources before it reaches you. Reading time: 5 minutes.

The most important change this week is a deadline, not a product: the second Making Tax Digital quarterly update falls due on Saturday 7 November, and HMRC has again confirmed that late updates carry no penalty points this tax year.

This week at a glance

  • HMRC: second MTD for Income Tax quarterly update due 7 November, with no late penalty points in 2026-27.
  • Xero: developer changelog of 5 November adds an Account Data API in beta, gated behind the Advanced Developer Plan.
  • Clark: announced Clerks, autonomous audit assistants, alongside an $11 million seed round.
  • IRIS: launched IRIS Document Management in the UK and the US, with AI processing kept in the region where data is stored.
  • QX Global Group: launched QX TaxReady for US firms, claiming a first-pass accuracy above 95%.

The big story: the second MTD update lands on a Saturday, and the penalty break is the real news

For practices with sole trader and landlord clients, 7 November is the second checkpoint of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. HMRC's own guidance lists it as the deadline for the second quarterly update, covering income and expenses for 6 April to 5 October. No tax is payable with the update, and HMRC's helpline is open from 9am to 3pm on the day, according to DM News on 2 November.

The numbers show why this matters. HMRC reported on 12 August that more than 436,000 sole traders and landlords had sent their first update and that over 570,000 had signed up. Not every signed-up customer had filed by then, and that gap is workload still sitting with practices. HMRC also said it would begin signing up non-registered customers from September, in stages.

The threshold is the longer-term pressure: it is above £50,000 of qualifying income now, falls to over £30,000 from 6 April 2027 and over £20,000 from 6 April 2028. Each step adds clients who need compatible software and quarterly routines.

What it means for your practice. Do not read "no penalty points" as "no deadline". HMRC has said updates must still be sent before the annual return, and a missed update now becomes a clean-up job in January. Check which clients have not sent update two, confirm their software is connected, and use this quiet penalty window to settle bookkeeping routines before the 2027 intake. Treat any vendor claim of effortless quarterly filing as something to test on a real client file.

Also this week

Xero opens account-level data to developers. On 5 November Xero's developer changelog introduced an Account Data API in beta, giving apps read-only access to account transactions, balances and movements, gated behind the Advanced Developer Plan. It also changed bank feed connections so each item in a request reports its own result. The tool sits in our directory as Xero (XeroForce & JAX), with an editor score of 4.5. Clark brings autonomous audit assistants and fresh funding. Clark announced Clerks on 2 and 3 November, which it says are AI employees assigned to an engagement that request missing documents from clients and prepare workpapers, with licensed CPAs signing the opinion. It also raised an $11 million seed round, taking its total to $16 million, and offers a 100% accuracy guarantee. Those are Clark's own claims. Clark scores 3.6 with us. Source: CPA Practice Advisor.

IRIS adds AI document management for UK and US firms. IRIS Document Management, launched on 2 November, offers plain-language search across files, OCR for scanned documents, automatic tagging and a client portal. IRIS says AI processing stays in the region where each firm's data is held and that client data does not train models. It is sold standalone or bundled with IRIS Firm Management. A fixed price per return for US tax preparation. QX Global Group launched QX TaxReady in the US on 3 November: AI agents prepare returns, and a preparer and a senior reviewer check each one. It claims first-pass accuracy above 95%, handling time 40 to 50% lower and costs more than 50% below traditional outsourcing. All are company figures from early deployments. One to watch: Intuit's ProPartner programme

At Intuit Connect on 27 October, Intuit said a tiered ProPartner programme will replace ProAdvisor in early 2027, with five tiers, increased revenue share and access to a matching network for clients. CPA Practice Advisor summarised it on 3 November. Firms keep 30% off QuickBooks, but tier benefits depend on certified staff and active connected clients. If you sit in the US QuickBooks ecosystem, review the tier preview inside Intuit Accountant Suite, which we score 4.1. Source: CPA Practice Advisor.
