About Tabula

Tabula is a Berlin-built AI accounting platform for tax and accounting firms and their business clients, which it describes as helping accountants evolve into accounting managers. It sorts incoming documents automatically, books payables and receivables with AI, splits invoices into line items, connects to bank accounts and credit card PDFs, and matches and books transactions. Its booking checks cover points such as addressee validation, input tax, private expenses, reverse charge, place of supply and insurance tax.

The platform also handles client collaboration. It identifies missing documents and sends clients automatic reminders, accepts uploads by email forwarding, WhatsApp or tools such as GetMyInvoices and InvoiceFetcher, and keeps queries between firm and client inside the platform. For companies it adds e-invoice writing, open payment tracking, automated dunning and batch transfers. Tabula is a DATEV integration provider and exports bookings, documents and bank statements to DATEV. It took part in Y Combinator's Summer 2024 batch and says more than 400 accounting firms and thousands of businesses use it. Pricing is not published.

It is positioned at German Steuerberater practices, where DATEV is the standard and the bottleneck is document chasing and manual posting.

Our in-depth review

Tabula is a sharp answer to a very German problem: tax firms spend a large share of their time chasing client documents and keying bookings that end up in DATEV. It automates both ends of that chain and leaves DATEV in place as the ledger of record.

What it does well. The booking logic is aimed at the hard cases rather than the easy ones. Checks for input tax, reverse charge, place of supply and private expenses are where junior staff make mistakes, and building them into the AI booking is more useful than raw extraction accuracy. The missing-document workflow, with automatic client reminders and WhatsApp or email uploads, attacks the real bottleneck in most practices. DATEV integration provider status means exports follow the official route instead of a CSV workaround, and more than 400 firms using it suggests the approach works beyond pilots.

Where it falls short. Everything is built around DATEV and German tax rules, so it has no use for UK practices: there is no Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, FreeAgent or IRIS connection and nothing for MTD or HMRC. Pricing is not published and starts with a sales call. The company is young, a 2024 Y Combinator graduate with a team of about 13 according to its YC profile, and the effort reductions of up to 70% quoted on the site come from customer testimonials rather than independent measurement. Security and hosting answers sit behind the FAQ rather than in a published certification, which a firm should ask about directly.

Best for. German tax advisory firms of any size working in DATEV, particularly those with many small business clients who send documents late or by message. In a trial, give it a month of a client with reverse-charge and mixed private spending and compare its bookings with your own. A UK practice wanting similar document chasing and capture should look at Tofu or a Xero-based tool in this directory instead.

Verdict. A credible, tax-aware DATEV-native AI bookkeeping platform for German firms, and of no practical use to practices outside that market.
