About Sage Copilot
Sage Copilot is the generative AI assistant built into Sage's own products rather than sold as a separate tool. In Sage Accounting, the small business software many UK practices support, it handles invoice chasing, automated data entry and VAT deadline alerts with submission to HMRC, and Sage's April 2026 product update says Copilot is now available to all users at no extra charge.
For practices, Sage announced in September 2025 a Making Tax Digital for Income Tax agent delivered through Copilot in Sage for Accountants, with practices choosing which tasks run automatically and which a person reviews, and further automation promised ahead of the April 2026 mandate. In Sage Intacct, aimed at larger finance teams, Close Automation with Sage AI became generally available to US and UK customers in November 2025, alongside Close, AP, Time and Assurance agents; a Close Analytics view tracking days to close and bottlenecks followed for early adopters in February 2026.
Copilot only works inside Sage products, so its value depends on a practice or its clients already running Sage. Availability and features vary by product, plan and region.

Our in-depth review
Sage Copilot is not a tool a practice buys; it is the AI layer that arrives with Sage software. For UK firms the real question is whether it removes the need for a third-party add-on on Sage client files, and the answer depends heavily on which Sage product the client runs.
What it does well. It is included. Sage says Copilot is available at no extra charge to all Sage Accounting users, which removes the cost barrier entirely for small business clients. The UK specifics are genuine: VAT deadline alerts and HMRC submission in Sage Accounting, and an MTD for Income Tax agent for practices using Sage for Accountants, where the firm decides which steps are automated. In Sage Intacct, close automation and a set of agents for close, AP, time and assurance are generally available in the UK, with close analytics to find bottlenecks. Because it runs inside the ledger, there is no extra data connection to secure.
Where it falls short. It only helps on Sage files. Practices with mixed books across Xero, QuickBooks and FreeAgent will still need another tool for most clients. Capabilities differ widely by product, plan and region, and much of the detail comes from Sage announcements rather than independent testing, so check what is actually switched on in each client's subscription. The MTD agent's fuller automation was promised in stages through 2026; confirm what is live in your Sage for Accountants account before relying on it for quarterly updates. The close features in Intacct are aimed at mid-sized finance teams, not at a small practice's bookkeeping clients.
Best for. Practices with a large base of Sage Accounting or Sage Intacct clients, and in-house finance teams already on Sage, who want AI help without another subscription or integration. Practices standardised on Xero should look at Mimo or Xenett instead, and firms that need cross-ledger review will find those a better fit too.
Verdict. A sensible, low-risk default for anyone already on Sage, mainly because it costs nothing extra in Sage Accounting and handles UK VAT and MTD tasks. Test it on a handful of Sage clients this quarter, list what it actually automates in each product, and keep a third-party tool for the rest of the book.
