About Briefcase
Briefcase is a London-based AI accounting platform for UK businesses and the practices that serve them. Paperwork arrives by WhatsApp, email or upload; its Autopilot extracts line items, matches documents to bank lines, handles prepayments, accruals and fixed assets, posts what passes its checks and flags unusual items. Supplier bills can be paid by open banking, and working papers, expense and mileage claims, sales invoicing and a full audit trail are included.
It runs either as Briefcase Ledger, its own double-entry ledger with open banking feeds from more than 80 UK banks, or as Briefcase Connect on top of Xero or QuickBooks with two-way sync. It files VAT returns and is recognised by HMRC for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax quarterly updates. Briefcase MCP is an official Claude connector and a ChatGPT plugin for querying the books in plain English. The company says it is ISO 27001 certified, stores data in Europe and uses AI providers under zero data retention. Founded in 2024, it raised a $3 million seed round, and AccountingWeb reported the full ledger launch in October 2026.
It is aimed at UK accounting firms, sole traders, landlords and limited companies, including those replacing outsourced bookkeeping or Dext.

Our in-depth review
The arrival of MTD for Income Tax has pushed many practices to look again at how client paperwork turns into quarterly submissions. Briefcase is a young UK company betting that one AI layer can capture, reconcile, close and file, either inside its own ledger or on top of Xero and QuickBooks.
What it does well. It is built for the UK from the ground up: open banking feeds from more than 80 UK banks, VAT returns, HMRC recognition for MTD for Income Tax, and capture by WhatsApp, which suits sole traders and landlords who will never install an app. Autopilot goes further than capture tools by handling accruals, prepayments and fixed assets, and the company says it only fully automates a treatment after a user has approved similar ones. Pricing is by volume, not per user, from £19 a month for 75 documents a quarter, with every feature on every plan. ISO 27001, European data storage and zero retention by AI providers answer the obvious security questions, and the Claude connector is a useful extra.
Where it falls short. It is young, founded in 2024, and the full ledger only launched in October 2026, so long-term evidence is thin. Volume plans auto-upgrade by default if you exceed a limit by more than 10 percent in a quarter, and unused limits do not roll over, which can surprise a busy client. Sage, FreeAgent and IRIS are not supported. Moving clients onto Briefcase Ledger means leaving Xero, which a practice should treat as a real migration with lock-in risk. The headline customer count of more than 6,000 UK businesses is the company's own.
Best for. UK practices with sole trader and landlord clients facing MTD for Income Tax, and Xero or QuickBooks firms wanting deeper automation than Dext without per-user fees.
Verdict. One of the more interesting UK entrants. Trial Briefcase Connect on two Xero clients first, compare Autopilot against Dext or AutoEntry on the same month, and file a test VAT return before considering the standalone ledger for MTD clients. Check partner pricing before rolling it out.
