About ADP Assist
ADP Assist is the AI layer ADP offers across its payroll and HR products, delivered as agents. ADP describes three tiers: simple agents for tasks such as updating an address or personal information, advanced agents for multi-step jobs such as catching and resolving weekly payroll variances, and autonomous agents that manage complex workflows end to end.
For payroll, the page says agents flag time and pay variances as they happen and guide practitioners through the fix, with transparency, governance and human oversight built in. Agents connect across ADP platforms and third-party tools, including Microsoft Teams, and are listed on the ADP Marketplace.
ADP cites more than one million clients overall and says its own HR policy agent saved nearly 19,000 minutes in one month across more than 600 organisations, based on internal data from April to May 2025. Pricing is not published and the page directs visitors to sales. The page we read did not state country availability or security certifications, so ADP's US roots should be confirmed against your own clients.

Our in-depth review
ADP is one of the largest payroll providers, and ADP Assist is its attempt to put agents inside that estate. For an accountant, the interest is practical: catching payroll variances during the cycle rather than after the run.
What it does well. Variance detection is the right target. Agents that flag time and pay discrepancies while the cycle is open, then walk a practitioner through a fix, address the most common payroll errors. The three-tier model is sensible about autonomy, and ADP states that human oversight and governance are part of the design. The scale of the company and its marketplace give clients a mature platform behind the AI. Being inside the payroll system means the agent sees live data rather than an exported copy, which avoids the reconciliation work that bolt-on tools create.
Where it falls short. Almost everything useful is behind a sales call: the page publishes no pricing and no named security certifications, and the savings figure quoted relates to policy questions, not payroll accuracy, so it says little about pay-run quality. The agents work inside ADP, so they help only where clients already run ADP payroll. Availability by country was not stated, and the vendor's claims are unaudited. Switching payroll provider later is a significant project, so adopting ADP for its AI features alone is a high-commitment decision.
Best for. Practices whose clients already use ADP, especially mid-sized employers with multi-step payroll processes. The page we read does not specify the markets served, so UK and US firms alike should confirm what is live for the clients concerned. It is less relevant where clients use smaller, cheaper payroll tools, or where payroll runs inside the ledger already.
Verdict. A credible agentic layer from an established payroll giant, valuable mainly if ADP is already the client's system. Ask for a demonstration of the variance agent on real pay data, request the security documentation, and compare it with Paychex WISE in the directory. Treat the savings figures as the vendor's own until you have seen them reproduced on your own clients.
