About SurePrep

SurePrep is Thomson Reuters' 1040 tax technology suite for US tax and accounting firms. It covers TaxCaddy, a client portal for document gathering, questionnaires, e-signatures, invoicing and return delivery; SPbinder, a digital workpaper binder; 1040SCAN, which scans source documents and populates tax software; and an outsourced preparation service.

The AI element is 1040SCAN. Thomson Reuters describes it as patented AI-powered technology that automatically verifies data for 65 percent of standard documents and processes four to seven times more documents than alternatives (vendor figures). It works with CCH Axcess Tax, GoSystem Tax RS, Lacerte and UltraTax CS, and its Organize function works with any tax software.

The suite is built for US 1040 individual return preparation and is sold through Thomson Reuters; pricing is by contacting sales. SurePrep is one of the longest-running tax automation suites in the US, now part of Thomson Reuters. Its AI is concentrated in 1040SCAN, the part that turns piles of client documents into return data.

What it does well. 1040SCAN reads source documents and populates the tax package, and Thomson Reuters says it verifies 65 percent of standard documents automatically (its own figure). The suite is joined up: TaxCaddy collects documents from clients, SPbinder holds workpapers with tick marks and cross-references, and an outsourcing team is available in busy periods. Integrations cover UltraTax CS, Lacerte, CCH Axcess Tax and GoSystem Tax RS, and named firms such as Forvis and BDO appear in testimonials.

Where it falls short. Pricing is not published; the page sends you to sales. Security detail was not on the page we read, so ask for certifications and data handling terms. A suite from a large vendor can mean lock-in: workpaper binders and portal history are hard to move later. The product is focused on 1040 individual returns, so it does not help with business returns or advisory work. Verification rates depend heavily on your client document mix. Setup is lighter than a full practice management migration, but your preparers will need training and your client portal habits may change, so plan the change before filing season rather than during it.

Verdict. A proven, enterprise-grade route to cutting 1040 data entry. In a trial or pilot, run last season's difficult clients through 1040SCAN and measure how many fields still need human review, then compare it with Thomson Reuters Ready to Review and Drake SmartExtract in this directory if you prefer a lighter option. Ask Thomson Reuters how accuracy is measured and how corrections are fed back, and request a reference firm of similar size.
