About Sterling
Sterling is a New Zealand company building what it calls finance operations intelligence: AI agents that take on the routine jobs of an in-house finance team. The website lists reconciling bank transactions and creating bank journals, filing supplier invoices in Xero, aged receivables and collections reporting, collections forecasting, overhead allocation, intercompany charge posting and monthly management packs.
The integrations shown on the site are Xero (including Xero Payroll), HiBob, BambooHR and HubSpot, with outputs delivered as Excel-format reports. Work runs through an approvals inbox where the agents raise questions and requests for sign-off, and a recent runs log records what each agent did. Sterling was founded in 2025 by Nik Wakelin and Ludwig Wendzich and raised NZ$3.8m in seed funding led by Blackbird, with angel backers from Xero, Vend, Pushpay and Trade Me, according to Startup Daily. Logos on the site include Manukora, Sharesies, FirstAML, Storypark and Echelon.
It is positioned for finance teams inside growing businesses that run on Xero, rather than for accounting practices handling many small client files. No pricing is published.

Our in-depth review
Sterling is trying to be the junior finance hire who never goes home: a set of agents that pick up the reconciliations, invoice filing and reporting chores that fill an in-house team's week, and hand them back for approval.
What it does well. The job list on the site is concrete rather than abstract. Bank reconciliation with journal creation, invoice filing into Xero, HiBob to Xero payroll checks, intercompany postings and management packs are the real tasks that eat a finance manager's month, and Sterling names them individually. The approvals inbox and run log are the right design for finance work, because every output has a reviewer and a trail. For a Xero business, the fit is unusually close: the product appears to have been built around Xero first, and the founding team and angel investors come from that ecosystem.
Where it falls short. This is a very young company with one seed round behind it, and its visible customer base is a group of New Zealand businesses. There is no public pricing, no published security documentation on the pages we could read, and no independent evidence of accuracy. Integrations outside Xero, HiBob, BambooHR and HubSpot are not shown, so Sage, QuickBooks and FreeAgent users should assume they are not supported until told otherwise. Anything the company says about time saved is its own claim.
Best for. A UK or New Zealand business with a small in-house finance team on Xero that wants to offload reconciliations and month-end reporting without changing systems. It is not a practice tool: an accounting firm wanting bulk bank reconciliation across many client files will be better served by Dext, Xero's own features or a practice-focused tool elsewhere in this directory. In a trial, a UK buyer should test VAT coding on bank journals, how it handles multi-currency feeds, and what it does when a transaction is ambiguous.
Verdict. A credible early product with a sensible human approval model and a strong Xero bias. Worth a pilot for an in-house team on Xero, but treat it as a young supplier: agree data exit terms, check security papers and start with one or two workflows.
