About Sage HCM

Sage HCM is a cloud HR, payroll and talent platform for mid-market organisations in North America. Sage announced it on 23 April 2026, built on its Criterion HCM product, and made it generally available in the United States and Canada that month. It covers core HR, payroll, time, recruiting and onboarding in one system, and is designed to pass workforce and payroll data directly into Sage Intacct financial reporting.

The launch introduced the HCM Agent, which Sage describes as its first AI agent for HR and payroll, supporting payroll preparation, validation and reconciliation and flagging potential compliance risks. The product site also describes Sage Copilot features for drafting offer letters and policies, parsing CVs and forecasting workforce trends, plus facial-recognition time tracking. Sage cites more than 650 enterprise customers, more than 30 native integrations and customers in more than 10 countries. A construction edition adds union rules and certified payroll, with partnerships including Procore and Trimble. Sage says Sage HCM does not replace Sage HRMS or its other payroll products.

It is positioned for mid-market organisations already on Sage Intacct, and for the Sage Intacct partners who now sell it alongside the finance system. It is not a UK payroll product.

Our in-depth review

Sage HCM answers a specific question for firms that advise Sage Intacct clients: can HR and payroll sit in the same family as the ledger, so labour costs arrive in the books without a spreadsheet in the middle? Sage's answer is a rebadged and extended Criterion HCM, sold through the same partner channel as Intacct.

What it does well. The pairing with Sage Intacct is the point. Payroll and workforce data are designed to flow straight into financial reporting, which matters for multi-entity groups and for construction firms, where labour cost drives job margin. The underlying product is not new: Criterion has more than 20 years behind it and the company cites over 650 enterprise customers, so the HR and payroll core is more proven than the branding suggests. The HCM Agent targets the right jobs, namely payroll preparation, validation and reconciliation, while keeping a human in control.

Where it falls short. The AI is first generation and all the evidence comes from Sage's own release, with no independent results on accuracy or time saved. Pricing is not published even though the site talks about transparent pricing, so expect a partner quote and implementation fees. It is available only in the United States and Canada, so it does nothing for UK payroll, where Sage's own UK payroll products or PayFit are the relevant choices. Firms on QuickBooks, Xero or NetSuite gain little from the Intacct tie-in and have broader options in Paylocity.

Best for. North American mid-market organisations on Sage Intacct, especially multi-entity groups and construction businesses using Procore or Trimble, plus the Intacct partners who support them. In evaluation, ask for a live demonstration of payroll journals landing in Intacct with your dimensions, test the HCM Agent on a run with known errors, and get the integration and implementation costs itemised.

Verdict. A sensible HR and payroll layer for Sage Intacct estates in North America, resting on a proven core, but the AI agent is lightly evidenced and the product has no relevance to UK practices.
