About Planful

Planful is a financial performance management platform that connects planning, close, consolidation and reporting in one system. Its four modules are Plan, Close, Consolidate and Report, aimed at finance teams that want budgeting, forecasting and management reporting without stitching spreadsheets together.

Planful AI adds an Analyst that answers finance questions and explains the drivers behind the numbers, a Planner that builds forecasts from a baseline and models what-if scenarios, and in-app Help. A read-only MCP server lets users query their Planful data from Claude, with queries inheriting dimension security and role-based access; the vendor says ChatGPT, Copilot and Gemini are coming next. Its trust page lists SOC 2 Type 2, SOC 1 Type 2, ISO 27001 and ISO 27701, with UK and North American environments shown on its status page.

The vendor claims more than 1,500 customers, and logos shown include Etsy, Primerica, Del Monte and Five Guys. It is positioned for mid-market and enterprise finance teams and the advisers who support them, not for small-practice bookkeeping.

Our in-depth review

Planful is an established financial planning and consolidation platform that has added an AI layer, so the question is how much of the AI is useful on top of a product you would buy for the planning anyway. It is aimed at finance teams, not bookkeepers.

What it does well. The platform covers planning, close, consolidation and reporting in one place, which suits multi-entity groups tired of rebuilding consolidations by hand. The AI features are practical rather than flashy: an Analyst that explains what drove a variance, a Planner that builds a forecast and what-if cases, and a read-only MCP server so Claude can query Planful data under the same dimension security and role-based access. The security story is stronger than many rivals on the trust page, which lists SOC 2 Type 2, SOC 1 Type 2, ISO 27001 and ISO 27701. The vendor claims more than 1,500 customers.

Where it falls short. Pricing is not published and there is no free trial; the route in is a demo. The page text does not name specific ERP connectors, only "thousands of connectors" and setup in "hours" (the vendor's wording), so test your own ledger early. The page does not explain what some badges certify, and GDPR is not mentioned on the trust page we read. Implementation of any planning platform takes real effort, and moving models out later is rarely painless.

Best for. Mid-market finance teams and advisory practices supporting them who need budgets, rolling forecasts and consolidated reporting. In a trial, rebuild one real consolidation and one forecast, and check every AI answer against the underlying figures.

Verdict. A solid, mature choice where planning and consolidation are the real need and AI is a bonus. Compare Cube for spreadsheet-first teams and Datarails for Excel-centred reporting before committing. Ask each vendor for a reference customer of similar size, and get the implementation scope, internal time needed and renewal terms in writing, because those costs decide whether the platform pays back.
