About Paychex WISE

WISE, short for Workforce Intelligence Strengthened by Expertise, is the AI layer Paychex launched in May 2026 across its payroll and HR platforms. It is built into the product rather than sold as an add-on, and combines four parts: WISE Intelligence for insights and recommended actions, WISE Assistants for HR and compliance help, WISE Agents that carry out tasks within rules the business sets, and WISE Advisory, which brings in Paychex's human advisers.

The feature areas Paychex lists include Intelligent Pay, which monitors hours, flags exceptions and assembles payroll for review; Intelligent Time, which chases timesheets and flags discrepancies before payroll; multi-state compliance tracking; benefits eligibility tracking; and hiring tools that post to more than 100 job boards. Paychex says WISE runs only on its own data inside its existing infrastructure and respects the permissions set in Paychex Flex. On 3 August 2026 it became available inside Microsoft 365 Copilot and Teams, and in September 2026 HR Executive named it a Top HR Product of 2026.

It is aimed at US accountants and bookkeepers whose clients already run payroll on Paychex Flex, Paycor or SurePayroll. It has no UK payroll relevance.

Our in-depth review

For a US practice that looks after payroll for small-business clients, the hard part is rarely the calculation. It is chasing timesheets, catching rate errors before the run and answering employee questions. WISE is Paychex's attempt to automate that layer across its whole payroll estate rather than bolt a chatbot onto one screen.

What it does well. The design is more considered than most vendor AI launches. Agents act within limits the business defines, Intelligent Time chases approvals and flags discrepancies before payroll, and Intelligent Pay assembles the run for review instead of submitting it blind. It sits inside Paychex Flex with no separate login, and the August 2026 move into Microsoft 365 Copilot and Teams suits firms that already work in Teams. The company says WISE runs only on Paychex's own data within its existing security model, which is the right answer to the obvious data question.

Where it falls short. Paychex's own published results on error correction and faster direct deposit checks are vendor-reported and unaudited, so treat them as claims. WISE cannot be bought on its own: you are buying the Paychex relationship, with quote-based pricing and no public rate card, and the company itself advises confirming what each plan includes. For a UK practice it is irrelevant, since Paychex does not run UK payroll, RTI or auto-enrolment. Firms whose US clients sit on Gusto or ADP gain nothing from it either.

Best for. US accountants and bookkeepers with a meaningful book of clients already on Paychex Flex, Paycor or SurePayroll, especially those working through the Paychex accounting professionals programme. If you are deciding where to move clients, test the exception reports and timesheet chasing on a live client before counting on the time savings, and ask the account manager in writing which WISE features sit in which tier.

Verdict. A credible platform-wide AI layer, but its value to you depends entirely on how many of your clients already run payroll on Paychex. UK firms should look at UK payroll tools such as PayFit instead.
