About Navan Audit Engine

Navan Audit Engine is the AI audit layer inside Navan Expense, the expense side of Navan's travel and expense platform. Admins share their expense policy and choose which of more than 45 audit checks to enforce, and the engine then approves, flags or denies transactions at the point of purchase rather than after month-end. Checks highlighted by Navan include prohibited items and custom keywords, detection of AI-generated receipts, off-trip spend, excessive tipping, and anti-corruption and bribery screening against the LSEG World-Check database for politically exposed and sanctioned people. AI reads itemised receipts and spots patterns, and dashboards show triggered checks and auto-approval rates.

Navan announced Audit Engine on 2 April 2026. It says around 75 percent of expenses are approved automatically on average, that it flagged two million transactions for audit in the first quarter of 2026, and that it caught about 30,000 cases of excessive tipping in 2026 so far, all its own figures. Navan Expense integrates with NetSuite, QuickBooks Online, Xero, Sage and Datev, supports reimbursements in 45 countries, and Navan holds SOC 1 Type II, SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and PCI DSS certifications.

It is aimed at finance teams that use, or are prepared to adopt, Navan for travel and expenses.

Our in-depth review

Navan Audit Engine is not a standalone audit product but a feature of Navan's travel and expense platform, and that framing matters. Its job is to check every expense against policy as it happens, so finance teams stop discovering problems weeks later during a manual sample review.

What it does well. Checking at the point of purchase, rather than after submission, is the right design for expense control, because it is far easier to stop a bad claim than to recover the money. More than 45 configurable checks give finance teams real control, and screening against World-Check for politically exposed and sanctioned people brings a bank-style anti-bribery control into ordinary expense workflows. Detection of AI-generated receipts addresses the fastest-growing type of expense fraud. Integrations with Xero, QuickBooks Online, Sage and NetSuite make it relevant to UK small and mid-sized businesses, and Navan's certification list is extensive.

Where it falls short. It only works for organisations on Navan, so it means adopting a whole travel and expense platform. Navan does not say which plans include Audit Engine; its Business tier is advertised as free for companies up to 300 employees, but buyers should confirm in writing whether the full set of checks, including World-Check screening, comes with it. The headline numbers are Navan's own. Auto-approving three quarters of spend is efficient, but finance teams should test what slips through before trusting the rules.

Best for. Businesses of meaningful size with regular travel and card spend that are already on Navan, or are choosing a new travel and expense platform anyway. For accounting practices, it is a tool to recommend to clients rather than buy. A trial should configure the firm's real policy, replay a month of past claims and compare what the engine would have flagged with what finance actually rejected. Organisations staying on Emburse should look at Emburse Assurance, and those on SAP Concur or Workday at AppZen.

Verdict. A strong, well-designed point solution for expense fraud and policy control within Navan, not a substitute for broader audit or fraud detection.
