About Drake SmartExtract
Drake SmartExtract is an AI-powered data extraction add-on for Drake Tax, the US professional tax software widely used by small and independent practices. It reads supported tax documents and pre-populates fields in the return for the preparer to review, with the aim of reducing manual data entry.
On Drake's tax year 2026 pricing page SmartExtract is listed under add-ons sold separately, marked new and in beta, with no price shown. Drake's own footnote says it is a limited beta available only to selected eligible Drake Tax Online customers, that it does not prepare, review, approve or file returns, and that extracted data may be incomplete, inaccurate, duplicated, omitted or mapped incorrectly. The core software is priced per tax year: Drake Tax Pro from $3,145 for unlimited returns, Drake Tax 1040 from $2,325, a Pay-Per-Return package at $379.99 including ten individual returns, and Drake Tax Online at $299.99 with the first user included, with additional returns at $49.99 for individual and $74.99 for business.
It is positioned at existing Drake Tax Online customers, mostly small US practices, who want AI help with document entry without changing tax software. It has no UK relevance.

Our in-depth review
Data entry from W-2s, 1099s and brokerage statements is still the least valuable hour in a small US tax practice. SmartExtract is Drake's answer: AI that reads the documents and fills the fields inside Drake Tax, leaving the preparer to check rather than type.
What it does well. It sits inside the software the practice already uses, so there is no separate portal, export step or integration to maintain. Drake is unusually candid about its limits: the company states plainly that SmartExtract does not prepare, review or file returns and that extracted data can be wrong or missing, which sets the right expectation of preparer review. For Drake's core market of small, price-sensitive firms, an in-product option avoids paying for a separate AI preparation platform. The underlying software remains one of the more affordable professional tax packages, with clear published prices.
Where it falls short. Availability is the main problem. It is a limited beta for selected Drake Tax Online customers only, so most Drake users, including everyone on the desktop product, cannot simply switch it on. No price is published, the list of supported documents is not set out on the pricing page, and there is no independent accuracy data. It is extraction only, with no review assistance, planning or client request workflow, so the saving is limited to keying. Firms wanting more automation now will find that Filed in this directory already works inside Drake Tax, and Black Ore covers full 1040 preparation.
Best for. Small US practices already on Drake Tax Online that are offered a place in the beta. If accepted, run a sample of last season's typical client packs through it, count the corrections needed field by field, and compare the time against manual entry before relying on it in season. Desktop users should ask Drake when, or whether, it will reach their version.
Verdict. A sensible, honestly described AI add-on for Drake users, but a limited beta with no published price is not yet something most practices can plan a season around.
