About Blue dot
Blue dot is AI software that reads employee expense claims, receipts and foreign accounts payable invoices and works out how much VAT, GST or other consumption tax can be reclaimed. Its products are VATBOX for VAT recovery, a taxable employee benefits module that flags spend which should be reported as a benefit, and Inspect, which checks claims for errors, suspicious spend and travel policy breaches.
Sovos announced on 15 September 2026 that it had acquired Blue dot, describing it as a Tel Aviv based AI VAT intelligence and recovery platform with more than 150 purpose-built AI models. Sovos says Blue dot's AI will be embedded in its compliance transaction flow; terms were not disclosed. Blue dot's site lists integrations with SAP Concur, Expensify, Pleo, Tipalti and Chrome River, and customer stories from Dell, Vestas, Michelin and British American Tobacco, the last citing an HMRC audit. These are the vendor's own case studies.
It is positioned at large multi-country organisations and the tax and finance teams that run their expense and AP processes, not at small practices.
Key Features
- VATBOX recovers domestic and foreign VAT and GST from travel, expense and AP invoices
- Flags expense items that should be reported as taxable employee benefits
- Inspect checks expense claims for errors, suspicious spend and policy breaches
- Plugs into expense platforms such as SAP Concur, Expensify and Pleo
Our in-depth review
Blue dot does one narrow job that most finance teams quietly give up on: reclaiming VAT from thousands of small expense lines and foreign supplier invoices where the paperwork is never quite right. Doing that by hand rarely pays, so the money is usually left on the table.
What it does well. It sits on top of the expense platform a company already uses rather than replacing it, and it handles the tedious checks, such as whether a receipt is a valid VAT invoice and whether a claim is really a taxable benefit, at a volume no person would attempt. The named enterprise customers suggest it works at scale.
Where it falls short. Pricing is not published and the product is built for large, multi-entity groups. A UK practice or a single-country SME will find little here. The Sovos acquisition also means the roadmap now depends on Sovos, and buyers should ask how long the standalone product will be sold.
Best for. Group tax and finance teams at multinationals with heavy travel spend or significant foreign AP, especially those already on SAP Concur. Smaller businesses wanting indirect tax help are better served by Avalara Avi or Sovos's core products.
Verdict. A credible specialist for big-company VAT recovery, but irrelevant to most practices, and the post-acquisition roadmap needs checking before signing.
