About Bloomberg Tax Workpapers
Bloomberg Tax Workpapers is a cloud platform for building, reviewing and maintaining tax workpapers, designed to replace the sprawl of linked Excel files that many corporate tax departments still run on. It keeps a familiar spreadsheet interface while adding documented workflows, version control and workpaper sign-offs, with rates and rules from Bloomberg Tax Research embedded so calculations stay current.
Its AI Expression Generator, introduced in July 2024, lets users describe what they need in plain language and receive a working formula, which Bloomberg says reduces manual formula errors and helps less technical staff. On 17 August 2026 Bloomberg Tax announced Controlled Calculations, a governed environment with system-maintained tax rules, including general state apportionment rules, that teams can still customise, with visibility over every override and adjustment. Workpapers connects to Bloomberg Tax Provision, Fixed Assets and Research, including self-service import and export of asset data and depreciation values. The product has won a Gold Stevie award and a Silver Globee award for its AI features.
It is positioned at in-house corporate tax departments and larger accounting firms handling multi-state compliance and provision work, rather than small practices.

Our in-depth review
Most corporate tax departments still run state compliance and provision on a web of linked spreadsheets that one person understands and nobody wants to audit. Bloomberg Tax Workpapers exists to move that work into a governed environment without forcing tax staff to give up the spreadsheet way of thinking.
What it does well. It keeps the grid, so the learning curve is gentler than a full tax engine, while adding version control, sign-offs and a documented workflow that an auditor can follow. The AI Expression Generator is a modest but practical use of AI: writing a formula from a plain-language request reduces errors in exactly the place they creep in. Controlled Calculations, announced in August 2026, goes further by putting Bloomberg-maintained state rules, including apportionment, under the workpaper, so teams stop rebuilding the same logic each year. Embedded rates and rules from Bloomberg Tax Research and links to Provision and Fixed Assets make it strongest as part of the wider Bloomberg suite.
Where it falls short. There is no public pricing, and quotes are typically bundled with Provision, Fixed Assets and Research, so the real cost is a suite decision rather than a single tool. Much of the value assumes you already use Bloomberg Tax content; without it, Workpapers is a governed spreadsheet. The AI features are narrow compared with newer agentic rivals and the award claims are Bloomberg's own publicity. The rules focus on US federal and state tax, so a UK practice gains little. Exact state coverage of Controlled Calculations is not published, and migrating workpapers in is a project.
Best for. In-house corporate tax teams and the larger US firms that support them, especially those already licensing Bloomberg Tax Research or Provision. In an evaluation, rebuild one real multi-state apportionment workpaper, check the system-maintained rules against your own, and ask how overrides appear in review. Practices wanting AI research rather than workpapers should look at Blue J or CCH Axcess Expert AI in this directory.
Verdict. A credible way to govern messy corporate tax spreadsheets, strongest inside the Bloomberg Tax suite, but quote-only, US-centred and modest in its use of AI.
