This is The AI Ledger Weekly: what actually changed in AI accounting software this week, checked against primary sources before it reaches you. Reading time: 5 minutes.
This week at a glance
- Xero used Xerocon Denver on 19 August to announce Casper, Xero Payroll powered by Gusto and a ChatGPT connector, with most of the practice-facing work marked coming soon.
- Xero's Auto Bank Reconciliation has now auto-reconciled more than 100 million transactions and is still in beta.
- The AICPA adopted SAS No. 151 on fraud, effective for periods ending on or after 15 December 2028.
- Accounting Today reported that vendor terms can licence client data for AI model training, sometimes under a perpetual, irrevocable licence.
- The IRS launched a digitally authenticated Tax Compliance Report for individual taxpayers.
The big story: Xero's agentic roadmap arrives, mostly as a promise
For practices on Xero, the useful question this week is not whether AI is reaching the ledger. It is how much of it you can switch on before the next month-end. Xero used Xerocon Denver on 19 August to set out an agentic roadmap covering client chasing, payroll and the close.
Three things are real now. Casper, an AI client manager from Melio, identifies missing information and collects documents from clients, and it works across ledgers rather than Xero alone. Xero Payroll, powered by Gusto, is now built into Xero for US customers with automated federal, state and local filings, and the Melio API is live in closed beta.
Most of the rest is dated to the future. XeroForce, the natural-language agent builder, gains a month-end agent that runs from document reconciliation status through to prepayment and amortisation journals, but it stays in early access with general availability later this year. A ChatGPT connector is due in coming weeks, and Scenario Planning, Document Requests in Partner Hub and the Word and Excel extensions of the Microsoft 365 Copilot integration are all marked coming soon.
The headline number is Xero's own. Its Modern Practice Playbook research claims practices using its AI capabilities save almost one working day per week and about $176,000 a year. That is a vendor figure from vendor research, not an independent measurement, and Xero has not published the sample or the method behind it.
What it means for your practice. Build this quarter's plan only around Casper, Xero Payroll and Auto Bank Reconciliation, because everything else has a delivery date rather than a login. If you pilot Casper, measure one thing: days from request to complete client records, before and after, on a fixed set of clients. Treat the working-day-per-week figure as marketing until you have your own before-and-after on your own timesheets. Xero holds a 4.5 editor score in our directory, and that reflects the ledger, not the roadmap.
Also this week
Xero put numbers behind its reconciliation beta on 13 August. Auto Bank Reconciliation has now auto-reconciled more than 100 million transactions, and the Reconciled page shows whether each item came from a match, rule, memory or prediction, with in-row editing and attachments alongside. Xero says nearly three in four customers find it saves time, from a survey of just 203 small businesses and 120 accountants. It is still in beta, and tax rate editing is unavailable in the US. (Xero)
The AICPA adopted SAS No. 151 on fraud on 20 August. The standard supersedes the fraud guidance in AU-C 240 and adds requirements on professional scepticism, fraud risk assessment, documentation and understanding an entity's whistleblower programme. It takes effect for audits of periods ending on or after 15 December 2028, with early adoption permitted and the final text due in October. Expect anomaly detection vendors to start selling against it long before it bites. (Accounting Today)
Accounting Today reported on 17 August that firms may be licensing client data to vendors without noticing. The advice is specific: search supplier terms for "improve", "enhance", "develop", "telemetry" and "anonymized data" near descriptions of services, and check the term of any data licence, because some are perpetual and irrevocable and survive the end of the relationship. Subprocessors make it worse, since they have subprocessors of their own and are not always disclosed. (Accounting Today)
The IRS unveiled a Tax Compliance Report on 20 August. Individual taxpayers can download it through their IRS Individual Account, and each report carries an embedded IRS digital certificate so that a lender, employer or agency can verify it is genuine. It is a small change with a real effect on practice workflow, replacing a slower request process when a client needs proof of compliance for a job, loan or benefit application. (IRS)
One to watch: the other ledger moved first
Intuit's mid-market release landed on 12 August, a week before Xerocon and outside this edition's window, but it is the context for everything above. Intuit Enterprise Suite gained multi-entity intercompany automation in beta, drafting entries from a customer's own historical postings, while QuickBooks Online Advanced added Books Upkeep, which runs through the month and surfaces only the exceptions. Both ledgers are now betting that the close stops being a month-end sprint. Watch which one reaches general availability first, and whether either makes drafted entries as easy to audit as they are to approve.
The AI Ledger now lists more than 150 tools for accountants and bookkeepers, each reviewed against the same criteria. Compare them at ailedger.uk/finder. The next edition lands Thursday evening.
